Two years ago I began a process of re-evaluating the book. This included inviting people to share their stories with me on my website, personal phone calls with readers, an in-depth study of issues surrounding my book overseen by one of my graduate school professors, and finally, creating a documentary film that captured the conversations with people who were reshaping my thinking. It has been drawn out because I did not want to be superficial in my response, and I have made it public because I think my reevaluation should be commensurate to the public reach of my book.
The purpose of this book by Joshua Harris is to push the envelope in the area of our passion and commitment to Christ and to the local church that He loves.

Joshua Harris , one of the most prominent leaders of the evangelical purity movement, says he has excommunicated himself from the movement in the months since he first denounced it. Harris, who when he was 21 wrote a book called “I Kissed Dating Goodbye” — in which he encouraged people to avoid all physical touch until marriage, including kissing — spoke out against the chaste movement in an interview with Axios.
He told Axios that his book “misled a lot of people,” and he wanted to apologize for it, knowing “you can’t give people [back], you know, years of their life. The title of that book induces panic in people, but in its pages is great truth for young men and women in dating relationships. I recommend it for all young people, high-school and college. I also recommend Boy Meets Girl. Both those books profoundly affected my view of relationships as a young person. Now this book was written in , so its not terribly recent, but it is ever relevant today.
Josh is now a pastor of a church in Maryland. In Stop Dating the Church, Josh speaks candidly about his own lack of committment to church in his youth. Today there are stacks of books in the Christian world that critique the church. The fact is that God loves the Church, in spite of its shortcomings.

Joshua Harris at Joffre Lakes, from Instagram. Joshua Harris has gone through some major changes since he arrived in Vancouver a few years ago. He came to study theology at Regent College. While there he made a documentary film which questioned many of the premises underlying I Kissed Dating Goodbye , the book that propelled him to fame at 21 — at least in wide swathes of the evangelical world.
I wrote about the process of making the film here ; to watch the film go here. I no longer agree with its central idea that dating should be avoided.
Weeks after announcing he was getting divorced, Christian author Joshua Harris is also separating from his faith. My heart is full of gratitude. I wish you could see all the messages people sent me after the announcement of my divorce. They are expressions of love though they are saddened or even strongly disapprove of the decision. Of course there have also been strong words of rebuke from religious people. While not always pleasant, I know they are seeking to love me.
There have also been spiteful, hateful comments that angered and hurt me. I have lived in repentance for the past several years—repenting of my self-righteousness, my fear-based approach to life, the teaching of my books, my views of women in the church, and my approach to parenting to name a few. I regret standing against marriage equality, for not affirming you and your place in the church, and for any ways that my writing and speaking contributed to a culture of exclusion and bigotry.
I hope you can forgive me. I feel very much alive, and awake, and surprisingly hopeful.

I Kissed Dating Goodbye changed the way a generation of Christians thought about sex, relationships and purity. The church is crowded with family and friends. But as the minister leads Anna and David through their marriage vows, the unthinkable happens.
Anna watches in horror as six others follow suit. First released in , the book warned that dating could cause irreparable emotional damage. The solution was to embrace courtship — where couples pursue friendship before romance, and parents are given permission to offer advice and help guide the relationship. Harris also advocated for strict boundaries within this: no kissing, no holding hands and no being alone together before you tie the knot.
Perhaps most famously, he recommended only beginning a relationship with someone if you could picture yourself marrying them in the near future.
